FIFTH ANNUAL FARGO FIDDLE CONTEST

Fair Admission Fees:
Registrants before June 15, 2008 will receive a free gate pass!
At the gate:
Adults are 5$
Children 12 and under are free

Divisions:

  1. Adult – age 18 and up
  2. Junior – age 12 – 17
  3. Youth - through age 11
  4. First-Timer – has never competed in a contest
  5. Twin Fiddle – two fiddlers, any age (doesn’t advance)
  6. Championship – top three scoring fiddlers

Judges:

  1. Lloyd Larson, Fargo, ND
  2. Margaret Elm, Valley City, ND
  3. Bruce Nelson, Erhard, MN

Prizes:
$40 – First Place
$30 – Second Place;
$20 – Third Place
Championship:
$70 – First Place
$60 – Second Place
$50 – Third Place
Cash prize for each fiddler who doesn't place!

Rules:

  1. Contestants play a waltz, a reel (or a hoedown, breakdown or hornpipe) and a tune of choice (other than a waltz, reel, hornpipe, breakdown or hoedown), in that order.
  2. No trick or fancy fiddling. (Plucked notes, double or triple shuffle, etc.) If in doubt about a tune, ask a judge!
  3. Two back up instruments allowed. Backup does not play melody. No bowed backup.
  4. No tuning on stage. If a string breaks, you can play at the end of your division.
  5. Time limit of 5 minutes for each fiddler.
  6. Scoring 0-100 points for tuning/intonation, difficulty of tune, rhythm/timing, execution (danceability) @ 20 points each.
  7. Pre-registration by June 15 is encouraged.
4 PM – Haining Family Band
4:30 PM – Contest begins
open acoustic jam session follows the contest
