Ann Schluter Bio

Ann Schluter has taught Suzuki violin and piano to students in Fargo, ND, since 1979, and has traveled to Belcourt, ND, since 1997 to teach fiddling to over 30 students one week each month during the school year. Many of her students attend Suzuki workshops and fiddle camps and often compete in fiddle contests in Minnesota and North Dakota. Ann travels throughout the Midwest adjudicating old-time fiddle contests, teaching fiddle and Suzuki workshops and playing fiddle for concerts and dances.

Ann is President of the North Dakota Old Time Fiddlers Association, which was formed in 2003 to support and promote old time fiddling. Ann organizes fiddle contests, concerts and jam sessions in the Red River Valley area. In 2004, she started a contest in Fargo for first time competitors and assisted with organizing and running a new fiddle contest at Fort Ransom, ND.

Ann also plays the hardanger fiddle, a Norwegian folk instrument, and studied with Andrea Een of St. Olaf College when she was awarded a scholarship by the Hardanger Fiddle Association of America in 1995.

Ann enjoys interviewing older fiddlers, learning tunes and styles from them, and helping to preserve the tradition of old- time fiddling by teaching and performing tunes unique to the upper Midwest. She has had articles and reviews published in local and national fiddle and Suzuki publications, including an article entitled Turtle Mountain Fiddling for Fiddler Magazine (winter 2001).

Ann recorded 12 fiddle waltzes in 1996 with Truman Sorenson, "Annie's Waltzing Fiddle" which has received favorable reviews, and plans a second recording featuring waltzes and slow airs. She is developing a fiddle method based on her Suzuki and fiddle teaching experience and has 37 tunes she teaches to fiddle students at slow speed for easier learning.

Ann has degrees from Minnesota State University Moorhead and has studied Suzuki Method and fiddling extensively in workshops since 1979. She is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, Suzuki Association of Minnesota, NDOTFA, Manitoba Fiddle Association, and the Hardanger Fiddle Association of America.
